AGHS —

An update on Avonside sport by Ms Paton.

Positive sideline support:

Avonside is a strong advocate of the movement within New Zealand Sport to encourage positive support on the sidelines.  We thank all our school sport supporters for modelling this behaviour for our young people so that this becomes the norm everywhere.

Basketball:

Senior A Basketball team go head to head every Tuesday night in the McDonalds Whelan Trophy competition against the top eight High Schools in Christchurch. The team consists of ten players which are mainly Y10 and Y11 students. The team is fast, skilled, robust, and big at heart when it comes to size.  - Kyla Lynch-Brown, Year 11.

Quad Tournament:

On 2 August our senior netball, basketball and hockey teams travelled to Timaru to take part in the annual Quad Tournament, an event that has been on our school calendar for many, many years. The four schools we compete against each year are Timaru Girls’ High School, Waitaki Girls’ High School and Christchurch Girls’ High School.

The venue at the Southern Trust Events Centre in Aorangi Park enables the four schools to come together in one place for the day’s event, and for teams from each sporting code to watch matches and support each other.

The games were played with a strong competitive spirit and a high level of sporting skill was on display.

It was great for each of our teams to put points on the board, with the basketball team winning two of their three games, beating Christchurch Girls’ High School for the first time in ten years.

The overall result saw CGHS winning the tournament, with Avonside in a very creditable second place.

We were really proud of the way the girls played and represented our school and pass on thanks to coaches Mr Vernick, Ms Williamson and Ms de Pass. Thanks too to those who travelled to Timaru to provide support from the sidelines.

Rugby:

Save the date………..The first official Rugby match is to be held Wednesday 2 September on our school grounds. We would like to promote our rugby which to date is undefeated and welcome all spectators…See you there.
