SCIENCE - Pūtaiao

AGHS —

The Subjects we offer in Science - Pūtaiao

YEAR 10 SCIENCE - 10SCI

Year 10 Science builds on the skills learned in Year 9. We have a thematic approach which covers all areas of science and allows for students to explore their interests. There is an emphasis on the nature of science, to understand and explore the world around us.

Entry Requirements: Compulsory course

Expenses: Nil

SCIENCE GENERAL - SCI11G

This course is designed for students who would find the external assessment component of the SCl111 course too demanding. The course is completely internally assessed, covers topics from biology and chemistry, and focuses on students developing good scientific skills. An externally assessed achievement standard will be offered to students who do well in the course and would like the opportunity to do BIO222 the following year.

Entry Requirements: Nil

Credits: Up to 20 credits at Level 1 (includes 4 credits Level 1 literacy and 4 credits Level 1 numeracy)

Expenses: Nil

SCIENCE - SCI111

This course is designed for students who have gained a solid foundation in junior science and who may want to continue with science courses beyond Level 1. It provides students with the opportunity to build a good knowledge base of scientific principles and learn to apply it in a variety of situations. Students will become scientifically literate and confident at explaining the how and why of everyday things.

Entry Requirements: Nil

Credits: Up to 20 credits at Level 1 (includes 4 credits Level 1 literacy and 8 credits Level 1 numeracy)

Expenses: Nil

SCIENCE EXTENDED - SCI11E

This is a more advanced course aimed at students who have a keen interest in problem-solving, understanding the world around them, and who might be considering a career in science. The course covers a wide range of topics and the content is more in-depth than in SCl111. Students will carry out extended project work on a topic of their choice. Choosing this course means they will have 8 hours of science each week.

Entry Requirements: Achieving well in Science and Mathematics

Credits: Up to 12 in Biology at Level 1, up to 12 in Chemistry Level 1, up to 12 in Physics Level 1 (at least 16 credits Level 1 numeracy, 4 credits Level 1 literacy)

Expenses: Nil

BIOLOGY - BIO222

This course will give students a deeper understanding of the living world around them. It will allow them to build on the knowledge they gained in Level 1 Science and further develop their practical, research and investigative skills.

Entry Requirements: 12 credits from SCl111 or 16 credits from SCl11G plus a satisfactory grade in Genetics

Credits: Up to 21 at Level 2

Expenses: NiI

CHEMISTRY - CHE222

This course will allow students to investigate, understand, and explain the nature of matter: its composition and properties, the changes it undergoes and the energy involved. Practical work and skills acquisition is a key component. This course leads to CHE333.

Entry Requirements: 12 credits from SCl111, including Chemistry, and a high level of competency in Mathematics

Credits: 19 at Level 2

Expenses: NiI

 PHYSICS - PHY222

This course will give students a deeper understanding of the physical world and will encourage them to question how and why things happen. The key skills are problem-solving in real-life contexts, and practical work. This course leads on to PHY333. Topics include: mechanics, optics and waves, electricity and atomic structure.

Entry Requirements: 12 credits from SCl111, and a high level of competency in Mathematics

Credits: Up to 22 at Level 2

Expenses: NiI

BIOLOGY BIO333

This course is for students who had success in BIO222 and want to extend their knowledge and understanding further. It focuses on contemporary issues including biotechnology, human evolution and human physiology. This course provides a foundation for further study at tertiary level in fields such as health sciences, biotechnology, medicine as well as animal and plant physiology.

Entry Requirements: 12 credits from BIO222, including at least 4 external credits. If BIO222 not studied in 2020, then 12 credits (including 8 external credits) in SCI 111

Credits: Up to 22 at Level 3 (includes 18 reading and 12 writing credits for UE literacy)

Expenses: $18 for Orana Park trip (optional)
