Senior Theatre Sports

Danielle Coulter —

This year our senior theatre sports team consisted of Year 11 students Georgiana Swift, Bayleigh Taylor and Georgia Stewart, and Year 13 students Lily Bond, Eleisha Friend, Jennifer Haslett, and Jessica Wheeler.

For the first time, we ran the juniors and seniors a one group during practices, separating for their respective competitions. This meant that the seniors acted as mentors to the juniors. They passed on advice and inspiration and shared copious amounts of laughter When their coach, Dani Coulter, was unwell the seniors really stepped up. The Year 13's ran practices and helped the younger students develop their skills and confidence.

Each year, the Court Theatre runs an interschool competition. The teams compete against other schools in a heats round, then the winner of each heat competes on stage at the Court Theatre in the final.

On the day of our heat, due to illness, we only had a team of three people. They were Lily Bond, Jessica Wheeler and Georgiana Swift. Most of the games usually require at least four people. Our students were creative and resourceful. Students played multiple characters and Lily performed a solo scene, which is terrifying when you are improvising.

Despite being the underdogs that day, we won our heat. The win was all the sweeter as some of our Year 13 students have been a part of the Avonside Theatre Sports team since Year 9 and this is their final year. Even if they couldn’t all compete on the day, they were proud to finally secure a win.

The same team of three went on to perform to a large audience at the finals at the Court Theatre. Another team won the overall competition, but our students gave an incredible and hilarious performance and should be very proud of themselves.
