Girls in Construction

AGHS —

This year we had a really motivated bunch of 18 girls who worked in small construction teams to design, model and construct playhouses. They used a range of tools and processes with a focus on quality.

They worked hard to ensure they were all finished to a high standard and using typical construction techniques as used by professional builders. They framed up walls, attached these to their the floors, learning about different types of timbers treatments, they built simple truss systems for the roofing iron to attach to. They used a range of hardware including, nails, screws, hex bolts, hinges, door locks and window latches. Each playhouse was an individual design and had its own features, one was painted in a fairy tale type finish, others in more modern paint styles.

The girls went out in all types of weather, working with a range of materials that were sometimes wet and cold, they were determined to complete the projects and find good homes for them. (One has gone to Rolleston). The playhouses all looked amazing when they were finished and the girls are extremely proud of their projects, and rightfully so.
