SPORTS COUNCIL

Stella Jorgenson —

Travel New Zealand with Avonside.

Over the past month the Sports Council had the objective to get the students of Avonside Girls’ High School moving and active again. With the event of lockdown sport was put on a sudden hold and motivation had to rise within. That’s when we decided to set the challenge to all students and staff to see if we could walk, bike or run the length of New Zealand together.

Over the past 4 weeks the students of Avonside were challenged as individuals, as Ako classes and as Pouako groups to cover as many kilometres as possible.

There was a prize for the individual with the most kilometres and the Ako class with the most kilometres. The winning Pouako with the most kilometres recieved house points.

There was an outstanding effort made my many of our students and teachers and we, as a council, appreciate you all for supporting it.

Now for the winners:

The individual with the most kilometres was Amelia Sykes with 1219km

The Ako with the most kilometres was SFTA with 1193.36 km

And the Pouako with the over all most kilometres was Cooper with 4064.09km

We travelled south, then up the west coast to the North Island to Cape Reinga, then back to Auckland and down the east coast to Wellington and Christchurch. Then we headed back around and got as far as Palmerston North again! This is amazing! Thank you so much on behalf of the Sports Council.
