Avonside Girls' High School Past Pupil Association

Elaine Clark —

The Association provides an opportunity for former students, teachers and staff to meet on a regular basis to enjoy the company of contemporaries, older and younger former students.

We maintain regular communication with the school and provide the 'Old Girls' Prize' which is presented annually at the leavers' assembly. We also maintain the Old Girls' Garden in the grounds of the school in Travis Road, the place where the arched decoration taken from the original school in Avonside Drive is displayed.

Events held by the Association over the past few months have included evening and luncheon gatherings providing for members of all ages including lunch at the Richmond Club, a late afternoon tea at Rowdy Kitchen and gatherings on a Friday evening at the New Brighton Club.

There are a number of year groups who meet regularly, some of whom are members of the Association, others are not, but they all play a role in preserving memories, encouraging social interaction and building of refreshing friendships. One of these groups will gather for their 76th Annual Reunion in late November.

Some of our members volunteer at the school in a range of ways particularly in the Literacy programme.

We are looking forward to celebrating the Centenary of Avonside Girls' High School in about 5 or 6 years and will be willing to assist the organising committee.

In 2021 we provided the prize for the inaugural 'HERstory' competition. Many Avonside students have excelled in a wide range of areas and it is great to know that the life achievements of some, in whatever field or endeavour, will be recorded for posterity. We acknowledge the support of former students who are willing to be interviewed and the support of the school in providing a platform for current students to research their predecessors.

We held our annual Christmas gathering on Saturday 26th November and it was wonderful to hear Mr Derren Coles, Laura, Jessica & Ella play a number of pieces as the Avonside Girls' High School Clarinet Ensemble.

The current Committee sincerely invites all girls who are leaving the school this year to join us.
