World Scholar's Cup - winning team!

Avonside Girls High —

Our winning team of the senior division was: Kalya O'Callaghan, Eva O'Callaghan and Neve Overend.

Debating until 9.45pm, an alpaca balancing competition and a talent show featuring Tessa Marshall playing ancient Greek music. It could only be the World Scholar's Cup. For the third year in a row Avonside has hosted the regional round of this international academic competition. After months of preparation, two days of writing, debating, multichoice tests and a scholars' bowl allowed our teams of three to test themselves against students from throughout the city. There were some outstanding results for Avonside this year. Congratulations to Neve Overend, Eva O'Callaghan and Kayla O'Callaghan whose team won the senior division. This is testament to the team's hard work and dedication. Eva O'Callaghan was also the highest scoring senior scholar for Avonside while Maya Livermore-Lewis was the highest scorning junior scholar. Other noteworthy results were third place in writing in the senior division for Zoe Croot, and third place in the senior bowl for Jemima Johanson, Tessa Marshall and Laura Powley's team.

All our scholars acquitted themselves well and had scores which were high enough to qualify for a Global Round. This year's round might be over, but we are still meeting twice a week. As well as being busy practising our debating and writing skills in preparation for next year's competition, we are now encouraging other students to take the plunge and join this fun, alpaca themed club.
