Badminton

Glynis Franklin —

The end of Term 1 saw an enthusiastic group of students gather for the trials for the school badminton teams.

We were fortunate to have our enthusiastic group of experienced players back again and a new group of inexperienced, but keen, Year 9’s joining up.

From the trialists we decided on 5 Teams, 4 at B Grade level and 1 at C Grade. In hindsight our top B Team should have gone into the A Grade. The squad met and practised 2 lunchtimes a week. The senior students made up of Year 13’s and Year 12’s organised and coached the younger players and were a great help throughout the season. By the end of the first few weeks, the beginners and C Grade players were all confidently scoring games and helping out with equipment.

We had a very successful season. The B1 Team won the majority, if not all their games, and could have played in the A Grade competition. Unfortunately, the organisers were not able to move teams easily, so they dominated their grade and ultimately won it. One of the other B Teams, B3 also one their division. The student’s were reliable at attending practises and thoroughly enjoyed playing other teams at different schools around Christchurch.

I am grateful for the hard work put in by the players and the assistance of Irene Wheal and Graeme Taylor who helped with transport and supervision throughout the season. Well done Avonside, another successful and enjoyable Badminton season.
