Alice Foote —

2022 was another successful year for Avonside football as we yet again fielded three teams who all competed well in their respective divisions. A massive thanks to all the coaches, managers and parents of our players without whom this season would not have been possible.

First XI Football

The First XI competed in the revamped Premier Schools Competition which was run for the first time by Mainland Football. This team was relatively new and young with the majority of the players being in year 10 and 11 and they competed well and held their own against the older players. They placed 8th in the competition. The first XI also had the opportunity to travel to Dunedin for a satellite tournament in term 3 and ended up placing 5th and not losing a game. Special mentions need to go to Hinekaea Taratoa-Bannister for captaining the team so well, Phoebe Hunt for winning tournament MVP, Ruby Hale for winning our teams Golden Boot and Player’s Player of the Year and Holly Neale for winning Most Improved Player. A big thanks to Mike Moore for coaching the girls through the season and to Nardine and Bex Schroder for their help on tournament week.

Second XI Football

The Second XI competed really well in their competition ably coached by player-coaches Ruby Lum and Elizabeth Webb. They gelled well as a team considering they had never played together before and as a result posted some big wins. Their manager Michaela May was impressed with how well they worked together and supported each other. Congratulations to Matilda le Warne who won Golden Boot and Player of the Year and to Fiona Ariyarudeekul who won Most Improved Player. Thank you to Elizabeth Webb and Ruby Lum for coaching and Michaela May for managing.

Development Team

The Development Team had an amazing year this year finishing second in our division. Under the direction of our player/coaches Sophie Tiffin and Sam Nordmeyer and co-captains Bella Ryan and Matilda Moran, the Development Team played hard, played fair and had fun. Awards this year went to Kayla O'Callaghan: Most Improved Player, Matilda Moran: Most Valuable Player for outstanding work in the goal, Sophie Tiffin Golden Boot, Constance Taitoko: Player of the Year, Matilda Moran Players' Player. Thank you to Sophie Tiffin and Sam Nordmeyer for coaching and to Nardine Schroder for managing.
