Amelia Sykes cycling success
Amelia Sykes (year 12) competed in the Elite Road Cycling Championships in Cambridge (12-14 February) and rode in the U19 time trial. She won the hilly 19km race and claimed the national title holders jersey.
Amelia also competed in the Vantage Elite & U19 Track National Championships held in Invercargill from the 24-27 February and her results were:
500m TT , gold medal for fastest time of 35.8 seconds
2000m Pursuit, two New Zealand records (both all-comers and National Elite Championships) and the gold medal (Sarah Ulmer Cup), in a time of 2”20.04
Points Race 15km 4th
Flying 200m, and sprint competition, fastest time 11.7 seconds and gold medal in match sprints.
Scratch race 10km, bronze medal.
Team pursuit 4000m (U19 combined with Elite riders), Amelia’s Canterbury team were all U19 riders for the qualifying round and broke the New Zealand U19 record. They also finished with a silver medal against an Elite New Zealand team.
