Ten Year Anniversary of the Christchurch Earthquake

AGHS —

On 22 February our students and staff reflected on the ten year anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake. Students worked in ako classes to create flowers full of their memories, hopes and dreams relating to the earthquake and the future of our city. We also observed a minute’s silence across the school at 12.51pm, as well as had a ceremony to plant a flowering cherry in remembrance of the events. We remember the 185 people who lost their lives; the families whose homes were destroyed; the business owners and workers who lost jobs and livelihoods; the students whose schools were destroyed. We remember the hardships people in our city faced through the earthquake and the thousands of aftershocks that followed. We remember with gratitude the emergency workers who came to the rescue; we remember those who helped in so many different ways. We also recognise the spirit evident in Christchurch as people showed real grit and resilience to rebuild their lives. Ten years on, our city is a different place and though there is still work to be done, we celebrate the progress that has been made towards a city that is inviting, diverse and imbued with all of our stories.
