YEAR 10 DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES - 10DIT

This course will introduce students to the concepts of digital media technologies, design principles and programming. Through project-based learning, students will explore animation, digital video, after-effects, photoshop, web design and programming. Students will enhance their skills in planning and developing project based tasks.

YEAR 10 DESIGN AND VISUAL COMMUNICATION - 10DVC

The focus of this course is to introduce students to a range of visual communication techniques. Students will use both freehand and computer aided design applications to generate design ideas. These skills will be applied to authentic design briefs where students develop and produce well-considered outcomes related to a product and architectural design.

YEAR 10 PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT TECHNOLOGY - 10PDT

In this course students will use the design process with a focus on researching, planning and functional modelling. Students will construct two projects of work, a storage item and a collaborative project for an educational toy.

YEAR 10 HOME ECONOMICS - 10HEC

This course will explore how to recognise societal influences on teenage food choices. Students will practice food preparation skills and learn how to enhance well-being by following a balanced diet. They will take part in collective action to enhance nutritional well-being in the school community.

YEAR 10 FASHION & DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - 10FDT

Students will research, design and construct two garments of own choice and evaluate the finished garments against specifications to ensure that they are fit for purpose. Students will have the opportunity to enter a Wearable Art Competition individually or as a group. Production of these prototypes support the development of your emerging design and construction skills.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY - DIT111

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the interesting world of computing through an engaging, informative and exciting school programme that will equip and inspire students to study in Digital Technologies.

Students develop ideas, manage a data base program, game development and web design. They work on achievement standards through two projects of work.

DESIGN AND VISUAL COMMUNICATION - DVC111

The focus of this course is the generation and development of design ideas through visual communication techniques that lead to innovative and quality outcomes. Students will develop sketching, modelling and computer aided design skills by working with a range of materials and processes. There are two projects that cover product design and architectural design.

This course offers students practical experience using a range of techniques and processes for the safe preparation of food. Students will learn how to interpret nutrition information in various forms to enable them to make informed food choices which enhance well-being. They will use Healthy Food Models to plan daily food requirements for teenagers.

This course gives students the opportunity to carry out research and present their findings on sustainable food practices such as sourcing food locally. Students will gain skills in interpreting, analysing and evaluating written information about current nutritional issues such as food insecurity in New Zealand. They will explore the relationship between well-being and food choices.

FASHION & DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - FDT222

Students will research, design, draft and construct a Wearable Art garment for an exhibition. New skills such as fashion drawing, fabric manipulation and advanced techniques and processes, with a focus on sustainability, will be an integral part of this course. Students will have the opportunity to attend WOW in Wellington and tour Massey University School of Design.

NOTE: FDT222 and PDT222 can both be taken in the same year only with the approval of the HOLA.

This hands-on course is aimed at students who might be considering working in the construction or furniture making fields, or who might find some written and design work challenging. It is a practical, industry Unit Standards based course.

There are two major projects that cover ideation, architectural design and exhibition.

This course is offered in collaboration with Ara, The Institute of Canterbury. Students develop ideas, manage data, program and web design, working on achievement standards through a project of their own choosing. 

Entry Requirements: 8 credits from DTA222

HOME ECONOMICS - HEC333

This course offers students the opportunity to build their critical analysis skills in an investigation of how eating patterns have changed since the introduction of fast food chains. Students will analyse food advertisements to discover their impact on food choices and well-being.

They will explore current nutritional concerns affecting New Zealand society.

FASHION & DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - FDT333

This course will encourage students to develop passion, interest, knowledge and skills in the many facets of textiles, fashion and design. Using the technological process, students will research, design and construct a garment for a context in 2022. The nature of the garment will be sustainable and ethical from a global perspective.

Note: PDT333 and FDT333 can both be taken in the same year only with the approval of the HOLA.
