Language Immersion Days

AGHS —

Japanese Language Immersion Day:

On 10 June students from Year 11/12/13 Japanese classes went to the University of Canterbury for a Japanese Language Immersion Day.

This day was organised by the Japanese teachers of Christchurch and the University staff. The aim was to provide workshops focused on NCEA objectives while giving our students an opportunity to meet each other and learn together. The girls were divided into groups and took part in three language workshops which were facilitated by Christchurch Japanese teachers.

The keynote speaker was Ms Gabrielle Gibb-Faumuina who is a recent graduate of Japanese from Canterbury University. She gave an interesting and entertaining talk about her journey studying Japanese so far.

The Japanese drum group (Takumi) entertained us with a captivating performance and the day culminated with the 350 students joining together to enjoy singing and dancing as a whole group to the popular song 'Papurika'.

While our Avonside dance project didn't manage to win the coveted 'cup', we were presented with $100 pizza voucher for our efforts.

French Language Immersion Day:

On 11 June students from Year 11/12/13 French classes went to the University of Canterbury for a French Language Immersion Day. The day was facilitated by UC students and staff as well as French teachers from the Canterbury region.

AGHS students took part in three NCEA focused workshops where they were encouraged to talk in French and meet other students coming from Canterbury. Throughout those activities, students embraced the French speaking world and got to discover French Canadian culture. Students also enjoyed some French brioche, took part in a game of petanque and French themed treasure hunt around campus.

The keynote speaker was Ms Zoe Reason who is a recent graduate of French from Canterbury University. She gave a beautiful talk about her experience studying French and the work opportunities that it gave her.

The day culminated with the 300 students joining together in a Quiz competition followed by some singing and dancing as a whole group to the quirky French Canadian song "Coton Ouaté"
