A SPECIAL REPORT: The Rising Trend of Ram Raids
School TV is a resource AGHS provides for our community to access articles, videos and other information about key issues for teenagers. This month's resource is about Ram Raids - a topic much in the news. This was in the parent newsletter last week.
Since the onset of the pandemic, ram raids have surged by 465% and predominantly involve perpetrators under 18 years old. These crimes entail forcefully breaking into buildings using vehicles and stealing valuable items. Often cash registers are the primary target, followed by tobacco, cigarettes, and alcohol. Disturbingly, these illegal acts are often shared on social media, creating a community that glorifies and profits from them.
A recent study has identified several key reasons behind the surge in these incidents some of which can be attributed to the rising cost of living crisis and the declining mental health of young people. Many young individuals involved in ram raids come from challenging home environments and feel disconnected from school, particularly due the disruptions caused recent lockdowns. The influence of social media platforms plays a significant role in promoting and normalising such criminal acts, enticing others to follow suit. Exposure to these crimes on social media can desensitise young minds, leading them to replicate such behaviour.
To protect children and prevent their involvement, it is crucial for parents and caregivers to have open conversations with their children about the dangers and consequences of getting involved in criminal behaviours. Providing positive and engaging activities can help counter disengagement and boredom, addressing underlying factors that can contribute to the participation in ram raids.
This Special Report will provide guidance on deterring children from getting involved in risky and unlawful exploits.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
