Success at the Programming Competition for Girls!

AGHS —

Nine Year 10 girls enjoyed the day at UC and Jessica Spackman and Kate Harden won both the Canterbury and New Zealand competitions!! A huge success 👏👏👏

The Programming Competition For Girls, is a national competition that was held at Canterbury, Otago, Victoria and Auckland Universities in mid November. Nine Avonside girls attended.

It was super exciting to be on campus at Canterbury in one of their large computer labs. The energy with 60 students from Christchurch, Ashburton and Tapawera was palpable! After an introduction to working the software on UC computers, a quick review of key Python programming concepts and lunch, it was competition time! Working in pairs, students had two hours to solve as many programming problems as they could. A national scoreboard for everyone to watch made it super exciting. Jessica Spackman and Kate Harden won not only the Canterbury section of the competition, but came out as the national grand champions!! This is an epic achievement!!

Well done to our winning duo and the whole team for taking up the programming challenge.
