Tukutuku Project

AGHS —

Avonside Girls' and Shirley Boys' had the unique opportunity to work collaboratively with Jolt Dance Company, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Ferndale School on the Tukutuku project this term.

Over three days in early August, a group of students from our school worked with professional artists to create original works that combined music and dance. The workshops concluded with a performance to the public on August 4.

This was a truly unique and special opportunity for students from the three schools to work together. The weaving of skills, interests and personalities ensured a journey of self-discovery for everybody involved.

Several pieces of original music were created by the incredibly talented high school students, with support from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra team. This music was used by the Ferndale students and the Jolt facilitators, along with the other high school students, to create powerful dance segments. It was amazing to watch the breaking down of barriers and the creation of meaningful connections for all the rāngatahi involved. Through this unique opportunity we have been able to celebrate diversity and inclusion. All of the students involved valued the chance to participate in such a powerful learning experience. We are thankful to The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Jolt Dance Company -mixed ability dance group, for allowing us to participate in this special event.
