YEAR 9

ESSENTIAL ENGLISH - TŪRANGAWAEWAE, HERE I STAND

9ENG1

In this introductory course to high school English, we will continue to develop the essential skills of reading, writing, listening, speaking and presenting for a range of purposes and audiences. Being a confident and competent language user is one of the most valuable skills students can have; this course is designed to provide ākonga with the strategies and confidence to engage with and enjoy language in its many forms. Our conceptual focus in Year 9 English will be the exploration and understanding of our different cultural identities and whakapapa, as well as appreciating the unique literary heritage of Aotearoa and Pasifika.

YEAR 10

WHAKAMANA, EMPOWERED TO MAKE POSITIVE CHANGE

10ENG1

Language is a powerful tool that can be used to create change and empower its users. In this course, ākonga will not only build on their knowledge and skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, gained in Year 9, but also be exposed to a range of diverse voices and stories from Aotearoa and around the world. Through the stories that we study, ākonga will unpack the concept of Whakamana, and how language can be used to create positive change. They will learn about the individuals and communities who embodied this concept, and who saw the need to create change to restore power, dignity, respect, and equity within their societies. The main aim of this course is to empower ākonga to become capable and confident students of English who recognise the power of language in all its forms.
