SCIENCE - Pūtaiao

The Subjects we offer in Science - Pūtaiao

LEVEL 1 (YEAR 11)

__________________________________________________

SCIENCE - SCI111

SCI111 is designed to empower students with the knowledge and scientific skills to understand the world around them. Students will study a variety of topics in the Science world, developing a strong foundational knowledge which they can develop further at Level 2 and Level 3. Students will become scientifically literate and confident at explaining the how and why of everyday things.

A combination of internal and external achievement standards will be offered, with students having the opportunity of achieving subject endorsement.

Entry Requirements: Nil

Credits: At least 15 Level 1 credits

EXTRA SCIENCE! - SCI11E

This is the course for students who love science and would like to explore even more areas than the Science course covers. It is aimed at students who have a keen interest in problem-solving, understanding the world around them, and who want to do a double science course. The course covers a wide range of topics, and the content is more in-depth than in SCI111. Choosing this course means 8 hours of science each week.

Entry Requirements: Nil

Credits: At least 30 Level 1 credits

Expenses: Nil

BIOLOGY - BIO222

This course will give students a deeper understanding of the living world around them. It will allow them to build on the knowledge they gained in Level 1 Science and further develop their practical, research and investigative skills.
Entry Requirements: Prior knowledge of Genetics from Level 1
Credits: Up to 21 at Level 2
Expenses: NiI

CHEMISTRY - CHE222

This course will allow students to investigate, understand, and explain the nature of matter: its composition and properties, the changes it undergoes, and the energy involved. Practical work and skills acquisition is a key component. This course leads to CHE333.

Entry Requirements: Prior knowledge of Acids and Bases from Level 1

Credits: 19 at Level 2

Expenses: NiI

PHYSICS - PHY222

This course will give students a deeper understanding of the physical world and will encourage them to question how and why things happen. The key skills are problem-solving in real-life contexts, and practical work. This course leads on to PHY333. Topics include: mechanics, optics and waves, electricity and atomic structure.

Entry Requirements: Prior knowledge of Mechanics from Level 1

Credits: Up to 22 at Level 2

Expenses: NiI

SCIENCE - SCI222

This course is aimed at students who would like to learn more about the world around them, but do not need specific sciences to continue into further education. A range of topics will be covered to increase their understanding of science issues around them, such as why is vaccination such a discussed topic? What is happening to our oceans with the effect of climate change? Are those food supplements really all that they promise to be? How did Banks Peninsula form?

This course will lead to the opportunity to study further Citizenship Science at Level 3 but will not lead to the study of Level 3 Chemistry or Physics.

Entry Requirements: Nil

Credits: Up to 20 at Level 2

Expenses: NiI

BIOLOGY BIO333

This course is for students who have enjoyed Biology at Level 1 or Level 2 and want to extend their knowledge and understanding further. It focuses on contemporary issues including biotechnology, human evolution and human physiology. This course provides a foundation for further study at tertiary level in fields such as health sciences, biotechnology, medicine as well as animal and plant physiology.

Entry Requirements: Prior learning at SCI111 or BIO222

Credits: Up to 22 at Level 3 (includes 18 reading and 12 writing credits for UE literacy)

Expenses: $18 for Orana Park trip (optional)

CHEMISTRY - CHE333

This course is an extension of CHE222 and explores the topics in greater depth with the addition of oxidation-reduction chemistry, and for those taking Scholarship Chemistry, the analysis of spectroscopic data. This course provides a foundation for further study at tertiary level in fields such as health science, engineering, forestry, forensics, geology, teaching, nursing and veterinary science.

Entry Requirements: Prior study of Chemistry at Level 2

Credits: 21 at Level 3

Contact: J Riddell
