LEVEL 2 (YEAR 12)

DIRECTIONS - DIR222

This course is most suitable for girls who would like to develop transferable skills that will prepare them for the transition to life beyond school. It is also suitable for Year 12 students who are yet to gain NCEA Level 1.

The course can be individualised to match the student's needs and interests. Topics include: assertiveness, problem solving, employment, future planning, and a work experience opportunity. Connections to the school’s “Gateway” programme may be possible for some students.

Learning aims to develop self-awareness, personal confidence, and the competencies necessary for participating successfully in life.

HOSPITALITY - HOS222

In this course students will develop the skills and appropriate knowledge needed to work in the Hospitality industry. Students will get an understanding of the workings of the kitchen through food safety knowledge, practical skill knowledge and food product knowledge. They will also be introduced to the front of house in setting tables and providing table service. 

There will be opportunities to gain catering experiences through various school functions.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT - ECD222

This course will focus on children's health and basic needs.

The well-being of children in childcare, an examination of childhood attachment behaviours and the food and nutrition of children will also be covered. Students will learn a range of skills related to the care and development of infants and young children along with report writing skills.

TOURISM STUDIES - TRS222

This unit standard based programme includes study of New Zealand and global tourism, and customer services related to the industry. This course is aimed at students who are highly motivated and able to work independently who are looking at a career in tourism.

LEVEL 3 (YEAR 13)

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT - ECD333

This course will focus on child development from birth to age 5 and an examination of Te Whariki, the Early Childhood Curriculum. Students will also develop and

implement learning plans for children and learn about the importance of play in child development. Students will develop an ability to examine a variety of written texts and learn to relate well to both adults and children. They will also learn to self-manage visits to local pre-schools to actively work with children.

HOSPITALITY - HOS333

This course further develops the skills learnt in HOS222 in a practical commercial kitchen setting, with a focus on presenting restaurant style and quality meals. Students will develop a variety of culinary skills through the preparing and cooking of vegetables, hot and cold desserts and further develop their knowledge of culinary terms. 

Students will be required to complete catering experience at various school functions.

PRACTICAL HARD MATERIALS- ITC - THP232

This hands-on course is aimed at students who might be considering working in the construction or furniture making fields, or who might find some written and design work challenging. It is a practical, industry Unit Standards based course.

Credits: 20 at Level 2 and/or 20 at Level 3
