The focus of this course is the generation and development of design ideas, cultures and perspectives through visual communication techniques that weave together innovative and quality outcomes. Students will develop sketching, modelling and computer aided design skills by working with a range of materials and processes. There are two projects that cover product design and architectural design.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY - DIT111
This course will allow students to learn and develop their practical digital technology skills, to solve simple problems and develop creative interactive digital solutions.
Students will also learn what makes a great website and use this to design and develop a digital outcome which could be a website, digital game or animation. Ākonga work on achievement standards on two projects of work.

FASHION & DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - FDT111
In this course students will work through two major projects, using sustainable practices as they design, draft and construct garments of their own choice.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY – FIT111
In this course students will work through several projects, researching, designing, testing and cooking food items fit for purpose. Students will evaluate the finished food product against specifications to ensure it meets the Brief requirements.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT TECHNOLOGY - PDT111
In this course, students will use the design process with a focus on research, conceptual design, modelling techniques and planning. They will design and construct one main project based around personal storage, such as a bedside table, shoe storage or coffee table. Students have the option to design and build an electric go-cart and compete in the national Evolocity go-cart competition.
Students will use sustainable materials and practices during this course.
NOTE: In 2024, students can only choose one subject from either Food, Fashion or Product Development Technology.

FASHION & DESIGN TECHNOLOGY - FDT222
Students will research, design, draft and construct a Wearable Art garment for an exhibition. New skills such as fashion drawing, fabric manipulation and advanced techniques and processes, with a focus on sustainability, will be an integral part of this course. Students will have the opportunity to attend WOW in Wellington and tour Massey University School of Design.
Note: PDT222 and FDT222 can both be taken in the same year only with the approval of the HOLA.

HOME ECONOMICS - HEC222
This course gives students the opportunity to carry out research and present their findings on sustainable food practices such as sourcing food locally. Students will gain skills in interpreting, analysing and evaluating written information about current nutritional issues such as food insecurity in New Zealand. They will explore the relationship between well-being and food choices.

HOSPITALITY - HOS222 (also: Onsite Vocational)
In this course students will develop the skills and appropriate knowledge needed to work in the Hospitality industry. Students will get an understanding of the workings of the kitchen through food safety knowledge, practical skill knowledge and food product knowledge. They will also be introduced to the front of house in setting tables and providing table service.
There will be opportunities to gain catering experiences through various school functions.

This course offers students the opportunity to build their critical analysis skills in an investigation of how eating patterns have changed since the introduction of fast food chains. This course further develops the skills learnt in HOS222 in a practical commercial kitchen setting, with a focus on presenting restaurant style and quality meals. Students will develop a variety of culinary skills through the preparing and cooking of vegetables, hot and cold desserts and further develop their knowledge of culinary terms.
Students will be required to complete catering experience at various school functions.

PRACTICAL HARD MATERIALS – THP332 (also: Onsite Vocational)
This Level 3 hands on course is aimed at students who might be considering working in the construction or furniture making fields or who might find some written and design work challenging. It is a practical industry unit standard based course that focuses on building a shed or playhouse while working in a small team.
