It is hard to believe the end of Term Three is here! We have had an excellent term in Year 7 - all classes have been extremely focused, engaged and motivated around our Term Three topics.

Well done to all students that participated in this year's Balmac's Got Talent show.

On the 4th of September 2 teams, Girls Football and Boys Basketball from Balmacewen went to the Zest Aims Games held in Tauranga.

Friday 2nd September was the Otago Cross Country held at KVC! After a couple of years not having the Otago Cross Country it was fantastic to see it go ahead this year and see our Balmacewen Students compete.

Poho kererū is a term used in Te Ao Māori which means to be full of pride, like the (wood pigeon) with its chest puffed out displaying all its beauty to the world.

After a 7 week strong Table Tennis Programme run by Table Tennis Otago, our Balmacewen teams performed well and a few students were placed on the Podium at finals night of the year 7&8 schools competition.

This week we had a number of students who competed in the Dunedin Intermediate Triathlon.

Over the past few weeks, it's been absolutely awesome to be able to host and attend our traditional school sport exchanges.

Year 8 Artists have been working on developing their ideas to personify an animal. Great to see the development in their drawing and painting skills. Their work reflects their excellent attitude to learning and their ability to problem solve and persevere.

Both Year 7 & 8 students have been developing their clay skills. They have been building a vast pottery army of clay warriors inspired by the Chinese clay warriors.

Over the duration of Term 3 we have had a high turnout of students competing in competitive and development Badminton Programmes.

Congratulations Year 7 Art students for finishing your painted cats. Great to see you showcasing your painting techniques, colour work and the ideas you have developed. Well done on your strong learning skills.

The Year 7's have started their second rotation in the technology department. Although only 6 sessions in total, the foods group certainly pack in a lot of flavour.

4 ingredients....40 minutes....1 great dish to produce....sounds like a television competition!

Mauri mahi, mauri ora! Do the work, get the treats! Many of our Yr 8 makers have designed and created awesome double sided aprons with at least 1 screen print. These fabulous outcomes are a real treat for those who put in a lot of hard work. Ka rawe!

Our Year 7's have made their first hand sewn outcome in our Fabrics room this year. They are gorgeous corner bookmarks for the reader in the house.

On Tuesday we had a fantastic day with students competing across all athletic events. It was great to see lots of children dressing up in their house colours and earning house points!

On Thursday the 18th of August, Glen came and visited the Writing Extension group here at Balmacewen. Traveling around NZ to talk to schools about his career, we were lucky enough to have him here in our school.

Taking pride in their projects and treasuring their outcomes.

Balmacewen hosted this year’s mini ukulele Jam, “Jam on the Hills” where students from Kaikorai, Maori Hill, and Wakari Primary schools joined together with a group of Balmacewen students for some ukulele fun.

Balmacewen had four bands that entered into the Bandquest competition this year.

This term as part of our Kaitiakitanga PBL some Year 8 students have been focussing on water quality.

The school council needs your help!

Last Thursday, as a final part of our Term 3 PBL, Room's 1,3,4 and 25 hosted a family/whanau Wellbeing night. The aim was to celebrate our term of Health and Wellbeing and also to encourage and support our Hauora - particularly around social wellbeing.

In Week 6 a group of students from Year 7 took part in a workshop that was facilitated by the University of Otago Brain and Brain Health research centre.

The Malcam Charitable Trust is holding a low-cost bicycle sale event during the school holidays, on the 11th of October to support the community to purchase low-cost, good quality and safe secondhand bicycles.
