Ni sa Bula Vinaka
Benetta Faualo - October 10, 2023
Welcome to Week 1 of Term 4.
This term we began by celebrating how God has made us all unique and we are created through Him and for Him. Teina Rua enjoyed participating in Fiji Language week and learning how God has made the people of Fiji unique. We coloured in our Masi picture and were blessed that Ms Fallon taught us a Fijian hymn. Here is a video that shows us practicing “Eda Sa Qaqa – We have overcome”. We look forward to sharing this song at our Friday Assembly.
The overall theme this term is – Health and Well-being with the focus on Te whare tapa whā. We will learn the importance of our emotions through Social studies and within Health & Physical Education by learning different co-operative games.
For Encounter this term we cover three different units. Teina Rua will learn that Jesus was a child just like them and that as he grew he showed showed us how to helpful to others. We end the term reflecting on the gift that Jesus is through our Christmas unit.
Teina Rua started the term with learning about Jesus being a boy and his parents losing him. Teina Rua were happy that Jesus' parents found him in the temple.
For Science, we are learning about being SunSmart.
We will be learning how to slip, slop and slap when we are in the sun. Our first week back at school has been interesting as Teina Rua has been asking, “Why do we need a hat when there is no sun?”
This term Teina Rua will explore ‘UV radiation’ and why wearing our hats even when it is overcast is being SunSmart.
Our Te Reo learning this term is linked to Science.
He aha te huarere (āhua ō te rangi) What is the weather like?
We continue to build on sentence structures by learning how to describe the weather and temperature.
For Math this term - We continue to focus on Number knowledge and number strategies. Our strand topic is Geometry and Measurement with a smaller unit on Statistics.
Our strand topic connects to our Science unit as we measure temperature. In statistics we will ask important questions about what we do in the sun and how we can keep safe while in the sun.
For Literacy we continue to decode words and comprehend different texts. Some of Teina Rua have now moved onto the NZ ready to read books. As a reminder, we began the year using the Phonics plus series which scaffolds learners through four stages. Kākano - seed, Tupu – seedling, Māhuri – Sapling and Rākau - tree. These books help learners to build good reading skills that support their progress through the Ready to Read series.
We continue to grow our writing skills and focus on retell this term.
Reminders & Notices:
Week 2: Celebrate Niue language week.
A reminder that Labour Day is Monday 23rd October (No school)
Hat Term
Term 4 is a hat term. We have space in our class for our ākonga to keep their hats so they do not forget them at home. Please see our dojo update for more information about the location.
Head lice
With the warmer weather comes itchy heads. The procedure for head lice is that if it is seen, your child will be sent to the office. At the office your childs' hair will be checked for any lice. If present, you will be contacted to pick up your child. This is to stop the spread of head lice in the class. We thank you for your co-operation with this.
