Science!
The R3 Transformers get excited when they hear the word 'science'. "What might happen if alcohol in a jar-with-a-hole-in-the-lid meets fire?" Silence. No one cared to respond.
So when it went WhooooshBOHPshangalaaaaaaaaaaaaaang! Flames ignited in the jar and popped the lid right up into the air. In one second, we found out. The reactions...Scared! Jumped! Turned to run. Froze! Eyes popping out of heads! "That was cool" "Do it again! all tell excitement of discovery Why do they like Science? "It's fun!" they say with eyes popping out of their heads.
Maths! We love to get the answers correct. So we are learning that mistakes are part of learning. Dr Pete visited our school and brought amazing activities for our willing-to-learn Transformers. They showed interest in exploring and problem-solving. They partnered up with Room 2 Amazing students and worked as a team with a mind set to never give up, to persist in finding not only the way but lots of different ways. They strived with a willingness to succeed. "Maths is cool!" was the common response. For Maths... enjoying the journey is key to success. Yes getting it right is great, but it's the journey, engaging with the obstacles, finding a way around mistakes, using a different strategy. We learn better when we take the journey to experience and understand the way.
Literacy! We are realising that we are not babies and toddlers any more. We can read for ourselves and find interesting facts and plots. But that's not all! We can write not just for the sake of putting words and sentences together but write so that someone else can understand and know what is on our mind. Reading and writing are necessary and key to a fun learning journey.
Worship & Bible!
We love to read the Bible together every morning, helping each other along, synthesising and applying what we each found to be useful in our lives. Couple of days ago we learnt the meaning of being 'sealed by GOD with His Holy Spirit'. They gathered around our science table to watch a message (value slip) being placed in a makeshift envelope and sealed with hot wax and stamp. The responses were, great big joyful smiles, showing a warm, quiet and divine assurance of each being a real child of GOD. Absolutely out of this world experience for anyone to observe. These young transformer learners then show willingness to record these special learning and understanding-moments in writing show growth and personal satisfaction. Wonderful!
