Faith on Fire!
Tuakana Whā have turned up the heat on our learning this term! Bible time kings, ecosystems, improper fractions, explanation writing, dramatic arts, and blending and steaming are just a few of the new learning we have explored in the last 4 weeks!
For a closer look at Term 2 so far, the Tuakana Whā team reports...
BIBLE
Tuakana Whā has done some researching on good kings and bad kings. We learned about king Hezekiah and king Jehoshaphat and the way they went to GOD, trusted GOD and how they led others to GOD. We also learned that we are princes and princesses because, we are children of GOD and GOD is a king so that is how we are princes and princesses. By Enali
MATHEMATICS
This term so far, Tuakana Whā has been learning about fractions and place value. For fractions we learned about how improper fractions can be written as mixed numbers. We also understand the value of different proper fractions and can order them from smallest to biggest. For strand, we learned how to calculate the time taken for an activity. My friend thinks that math is interesting because we get to learn things that I've seen in other places but I didn't understand. By Bevan
LITERACY
This term Tuakana Whā have been learning how to self-asses our own writing and reading, and learning the success criteria (SC) on how to draft and explanation. We have also been doing public speaking on the topics “How to?” and “Why do?” We do public speaking to help us train for when we do speeches or science fairs. We have been learning how to make an inference in reading. Making inferences is an important skill in reading because we can learn more about what the author is saying by looking for clues in a text and by using our own knowledge.
Here’s what my classmates think about learning Literacy: Olit thinks it's fun and it gives you more things to write about and more learning experiences. Bevan thinks that it is interesting because he gets to add many different skills in writing. Zipporah likes literacy because when she reads she can sound out and read most of the words.
SCIENCE
Ecosystems are made up of living and non-living things that interact with each other. One of the activities we did was walk around our school and look for ecosystems and we observed how the soil supports flowering plants, that provide food for the bees. Also, worms and millipedes hide under rocks while moss need rocks to grow on. When we got back to the classroom, we made a diagram of our school's ecosystem.
In groups, we also researched different ecosystems in the world such as deserts, tundra, rainforests, and deciduous forests. We then presented them to the class using Google Slides. By M & Mrs Ryu
FOOD TECHNOLOGY
In food technology, we learned about how new food is processed. So far this term, we have made fruit smoothies, chicken dumplings and created new sandwich biscuits using the Input > Process > Output system.
We loved making fruit smoothies because we can control what we put into it and adjust it to our liking. Fruit smoothies were one of the best and most healthiest recipes we’ve done
Making chicken dumplings was also a very cool experience. Controlling what you put into them and making different shapes and designs on the dumpling was very cool. A lot of people made very cool shapes on their dumplings, which makes them very unique.
Food technology has helped us create our own versions of food we love. The feeling of knowing you made it makes you very proud and makes you want to learn a lot more of it. By Olit
DRAMATIC ARTS
This term Tuakana Whā learned some elements of drama like belief, timing, body language and tension. Some people think that drama is hard but some think that drama is easy. Bevan thinks that drama is hard because the emotions are hard to act out. Olit also thinks that drama is hard because when you act you can’t keep your laughter in! By Essel & Mary-Jane
