A new beginning - Term 4
It seems not long ago I wrote my first newsletter for Rm5 and now we have reached a new start - Term 4!
Welcome back to another term! Our last term for 2022 and the last term for some of our students in Rm5.
This term is going to be very full on and I'm excited to get some new learning into our tamarikis minds. Lots and lots of tu meke learning and fun days going on in the school so PLEASE look out for our school calendar! 😁
This terms theme is all about Space and Time.
Here's Rm5s learning for the next 8 weeks
Bible
For Bible we are looking at:
- The Parable Preacher
- The Prodigal Son
We are also going to reflect and share how our love for Jesus has grown over the year once we start reaching the final weeks of school. But these are stories and great lessons that everyone can learn from - including us adults. Rm5 have already started the unit of the Parable Preacher and it's awesome to see that some of our tamariki already know the stories of some of this unit. Thank you family for showing and telling Rm5 what Jesus is all about!
Numeracy
This term Rm5 are going to focus on problem and number solving. This involves them to solve and investigate word problems as well as creating their own word problems with their peers as well. We are also going to go over our conversions between fractions, percentages and decimals.
As well as concentrating on their numeracy skills we will also look at different geomertric shapes. I believe that this will be a nice fit with our theme also. This is what we'll focus on;
Number
- Use a range of multiplicative strategies when
operating on whole numbers.
- Know the equivalent decimal and percentage forms for everyday fractions.
Geometry and Measurement:
- Identify classes of two- and three-dimensional
shapes by their geometric properties.
We were so blessed to learn and have fun with Dr Pete who came to BSDA on Wednesday. It was a wonderful time to see the kids have fun and engage with the different number of games!
Literacy
Rm5 are brilliant writers, but what can we do to extend their writing skills? This term our tamariki and I are going to focus on how to explain a text. We are also going to learn and focus on some life cycle texts as it fits with our theme also.
The speech competition is coming up which means that we will revise and go through persuasive writing. Everyone does have to say a speech in front of the classroom, this will not only build their literacy skills but it'll build their confidence to help speak in front of people. This will be good especially for our year 7's who are going to be our new student leaders next year.
Science
We are pushing Rm5s level of thinking and we're going to look at Space - Astronomy later on in the term. In the first four weeks of the term, we're focussing on our STEM projects which will be displayed in the hall for our learning expo. Our tamariki are able to show and tell you what they have researched and made themselves over the few weeks in class, this is exciting for me because it gives our tamariki a chance to explain and teach you (family members) what they've learnt!
Here are a few science projects;
Social Science, Te Reo Maori & Arts
Both Social Science and Arts are put together. Rm5 will study dance and music over time and how that has impacted our people. We know that music and dance is something our kids are interested in, I hear about it all the time in class! 😄 This will be a great subject that will focus on change over time. Another subject we will concentrate on is deforestation - change over time. This will integrate with our science subject as well.
Te Reo Maori - we are going to make connections with these 4 concepts over our learning.
We will be covering these learning objectives;
- creating a poster listing simple classroom rules or role-play an interaction that clarifies the rules of conduct on a local marae
- asking or answering questions about what they will do during an afternoon off school
- role-playing the appropriate way to ask to visit a local marae.
As well as practising our school pepeha, Te Reo Maori is important for us to learn and engage in our learning.
Health and P.E
This term our main sports will be volleyball and badminton, these different sports will help them practise and control the ball. Rm5 will also continue to practise their hand eye coordination skills as well as keeping their level of fitness up.
Notices
- Wednesday sports day
- Just a kind reminder. Please keep an eye of what time our tamariki go to sleep. The kids should be getting a good 9-11 hour sleep and sometimes they do get a bit sleepy in class. Thank you family.
