High Flyers Museum Visit

Sue Harris —

Earlier in the term the High Flyers visited the museum as part of our NZ Histories topic studies.

This term we are learning about our NZ History. We started this by visiting the museum to find out about Maori settlement in our local area and how the early Maori lived. We found out where our Maori people came from, why and how they came here and what they brought with them.

We explored the Takata Whenua gallery looking at food gathering in our local area and enjoyed a hands on session with our museum educators Ruth and Marie in the education space. We also learned how tools were used for food gathering and about Maori games for tamariki. It was really interesting and a great way to begin learning about our local history.

Student voice:

Kye: It was fun playing with the Maori games.

Logan: I really liked listening to the stories that Marie told us.

Emma: I enjoyed trying out the rakau sticks with Mya.

Aria: I enjoyed dressing up in the clothing.

Faith: I liked trying out the spinning disks and the dress ups.

Ryan: I really enjoyed learning about the tools that were used to catch food.
