Flax Weaving in Room 21

Phillip Barnett —

Room 21 has been learning how to weave flax as part of the High Flyers art rotation on Thursday afternoon.

Over the last two Thursday’s Room 21 learned about the tikanga around collecting flax, which parts of the plant to harvest our flax around and what to do with any leftovers.

During our first session the children practiced folding 1 piece of flax into a rose and on our second Thursday they weaved two separate pieces of flax together to create a small fish.

We were really lucky to have our amazing learning assistant Holly with us for these times, as she proved to be an expert and was able to troubleshoot any hiccups as we worked our way through the weaving.
