The Birth of Bluestone

Bluestone School —

The name Bluestone reflects the solid foundations our school is built on, and goes far back in our district's history.

Many years ago a local volcano, Mt Horrible erupted and a layer of basalt (also known as bluestone) oozed across our district. Today bluestone is quarried and used all around the country as a building and paving material.

In 2003 & 2004 the government called for an education review in the Timaru district. Timaru Main and Timaru West were merged on the West School site. The only intermediate in Timaru, Watlington Intermediate was closed so all primary schools in Timaru became year 1-8 schools.

As the Main and West communities prepared to come together to form a new school at the start of 2005 a new name was needed. A competition was held and the name Bluestone was chosen, representing a solid foundation on which to build and nurture a new beginning. Bluestone has grown to be the biggest primary School in the South Island south of Christchurch.
