Commonwealth Games in Te Tahi

Corinna Brook —

Supporting our kiwi sport stars who competed at Birmingham 2022.

The Te Tahi students enjoyed watching snippets of the Commonwealth Games at the beginning of the term.  They were very intrigued with the pole vault, high jump, swimming (especially learning that Sophie Pascoe can take her foot on and off), weightlifting, medal ceremonies, and were very proud to learn that the man (Tom Walsh) who helped carry our flag "into the party" was from Timaru...and to also learn that he won GOLD!

Our latest Discovery Time had a Commonwealth Games theme.  Activities included medal colouring, flag colouring, flag designing, uniform designing, javelin throwing, indoor bowls, marbles, cup pyramid building and long jumping!  What fun!

During Maths Week last week, Room 5 used shapes to create athletes from the Commonwealth Games...I wonder if you can recognise them?

Student voice:

Corbyn - I liked the jumping and watching her get the gold medal (pole vaulting). Our flag has 4 stars and the Australian flag has got 6 stars.

Scott - She got a cow! (referring to the Birmingham cow mascot)

Amiya - He got first so he got a gold medal!

Maddie - I saw someone jumping into the sandpit.

Robbie - He's second so he got a silver medal.

Beau - I saw someone from Kenya.  Our penpal is from Kenya too.

Eli - I liked the bike racing.

Eva - She flew through the air like a butterfly (referring to a long jumper).

Leonard - He's from India! (referring to the Bronze medalist for mens high jump).
