Bluestone is gardening

Gabriel Weibl —

Mitre 10 MEGA Gardening and Bluestone have begun cooperating in an education module. Liz visited Bluestone to help to educate students about gardening, planting vegetables, fruit, flowers and house plants. Our school’s Garden Club and Room 16 engaged Liz in discussion about nutrients diet, soil and productive gardens – outdoor and indoor, large and even potted gardens. We also discussed the types of vegetables, fruit and plants available in New Zealand, and those which are particularly more common and successful in South Canterbury and then we got our hands dirty planting.

Each student was provided with a plastic milk bottle glass house with 3 different seedlings. One a flowering plant, one was garlic and the third was a seed for green plants (peas, corn …) Mitre 10 supplied us with all the necessary components: composting, gardening mix, seedlings and the seeds in biodegradable small pots. The Bluestone Garden Club boosted its soil in the raised gardens with compost, used coffee beans, blood & bone and with seaweed pellets.

Liz also brought winter crop seedlings for our garden and taught us different techniques of planting and care taking of gardens. We weeded the garden plots and together planted leeks, onions and broccoli. We enjoyed the first visit and cooperation with Liz and Mitre 10 Mega very much. We look forward to Liz’s next visit as she will spread her knowledge and skills to other classrooms, assist our Gardening Club and teach us about a variety of crops, gardening and related innovative techniques in future.
