Who is Fibonacci?

Fibonacci was a mathematician from the Republic of Pisa in what is now Italy, considered to be, "the most talented Western mathematician of the Middle Ages."
He was born in Italy in 1170 and is well known for the discovery of the Fibonacci sequence.
How do you work out the Fibonacci sequence? Add the the first term (1) and 0.
- To find any given number in the Fibonacci sequence, you simply add the two previous numbers in the sequence.
- To create the sequence, you should think of 0 coming before 1 (the first term), so 1 + 0 = 1.
so the sequence goes as follows 0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34.....
The Fibonacci numbers are Nature's numbering system. They appear everywhere in Nature, from the leaf arrangement in plants, to the pattern of the florets of a flower, the bracts of a pinecone, or the scales of a pineapple.
To learn more about the sequence we drew circles with the radius measuring the numbers in the sequence. We then learnt to accurately use a compass to draw our circles. The students then arranged their circles in different ways. Check out our pictures, below.
