Matariki

Justine Reihana —

Bluestone School has been celebrating Matariki, 2022

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in midwinter and for many Māori, it is the start of a new year. Traditionally Māori take this time to reflect on the old year, set goals for the new year and celebrate through stories, dance, waiata and kite flying.

This year Matariki will rise from the 21 June to 29 June. We are having our first public holiday to celebrate Matariki this Friday. Students have been learning about Matariki, the constellations, the significance of the day, the myths and traditiions.

Please check out what they have been learning.
