Numicon! Numicon! Numicon!

Corinna Brook —

Te Tahi and Creative Creatures have embarked on a Numicon journey for Maths.

Bluestone has begun to implement Numicon into the Maths programme for our junior classrooms.  Numicon is a proven, research-based programme which teaches our ākonga (students) about numbers and what they mean, before and alongside counting and patterning activities, games, songs, in a structured approach.

Our ākonga absolutely love manipulating, ordering, and building with the numicon shapes.

Numicon not only helps our ākonga understand the numbers to 10, and different ways to make 10, but it will also eventually help them understand teen numbers, place value, decade numbers, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, and symmetry...just to name a few!

Student speak:

Kanan - "The number 3 is yellow.  It has 3 holes and a sticky up bit".  (Note: we are learning that the shapes with a bit sticking up at the top is an odd number.)

Matteo - "A 2 and 3 can be a 5".

Kashinath - "I like making the patterns".  (Note: we used numicon to create repeated patterns.)

Saanvi - "I can make a staircase". (Note: this is when we order the numicon shapes 1-10.)

Eva - "I like the patterns".

Matilda - "The 6 is turquoise".
