Matariki Acrostic Poems

Justine Reihana —

Room 10 wrote Matariki poems.

At the end of Term 2 Room 10 celebrated Matariki. We found out what Matariki is (Māori New Year), why, when and how it's celebrated. We worked in pairs and created Matariki Acrostic Poems. Here are some examples. If you want to read more, the class collated them into a booklet and they are in our class library.

Matariki

Matariki is the time of year

A lot of people come together to have a party.

Twinkling stars in the midnight sky.

A party is a way to celebrate Matariki.

Reading old tales from long ago.

I like to eat at Matariki.

Kindness and stories are a Maori tradition.

I love Matariki.

Matariki is a Māori New Year.

A celebration.

To share.

A time to think about others.

Ready to do something new.

It is a day to sing and dance.

Keeps coming every year.

I love Matariki!

Matariki

Matariki are seven stars.

And they come out in May.

Try something new.

A lot of people like to sing during Matariki.

Remembering loved ones.

It’s winter when we celebrate Matariki.

Kapa haka is a way we celebrate Matariki.

It’s a time to spend with your family.

A time to dance, sing and eat.

Amazing stars.

Right season to plant crops.

I love Matariki.

Kind people come together to celebrate.

It is very fun.

Matariki is a time to have fun.

Amazing stars shine in the sky

Twinkling in the night.

A time to spend with your family.

Ready to have a feast.

I like having bonfires.

Kai is eating food.

I love Matariki!
