Year 8 Camp

Jacqui Emerson —

Aoraki Mt Cook 18th -21st March, 2025

What a fantastic experience the Year 8 students have just had at Mt Cook. From hiking the Hooker Valley track and The Glacier Explorer, to being part of a Search and Rescue Scenario at SAR headquarters. We based ourselves at Glentanner Park Centre which was a fabulous place right by Lake Pukaki with a spectacular view of Mt Cook. We were spoiled with delicious food each night and fun activities like spotlight.

The Hooker Valley Track:

The students participated in a 1 ½ hr return walk to the Hooker Lake across swing bridges to discover locations along the way such as the original Hermitage Hotel site, Freda’s Rock, Mueller moraines and the first swing bridge. Well done to the Year 8 students who all successfully completed the 3hr walk.

The Glacier Explorer:

This was definitely a highlight of the trip for many students. We climbed aboard a boat and went on an adventure of both high speed thrills and learning about how climate change is affecting the Tasman Glacier at an alarming rate. The students were able to touch an iceberg and eat a piece of the ice too.

Search and Rescue Scenario:

The Year 8 students visited the SAR Emergency services where we met Ray, one of the rangers, who outlined the emergency management processes in NZ and the park. Ray took us through a scenario where the students took part in a role play to retrieve a missing class member.

A big thank you to all those who made this wonderful Camp possible.
