Team Explorer's Museum and Library Trip

Justine Reihana —

Team Explorer went on a road trip.

Our topic for this term is 'Team Explorer Explores the Solar System - The Sun, Moon and Stars. We have integrated our topic into our reading and writing programme. The students have been researching the sun, moon and stars and will write an information report about it. As part of Te Reo and Tikanga Māori aspect of our topic we took a trip to the Museum and Library to learn about Matariki (Māori New Year).

The students looked at different traditional toys and games in the Museum. They learnt about the significance of Matariki to Māori and the history of the stars. They completed a scavenger hunt at the library and made Matariki stars.

Team Explorer would like to thank the parents who came along to help. We wouldn't be able to go on trips without parent support. We'd also like to thank Ruth and the staff at the Museum and Anita and the staff at the Library. They created an awesome programme related to our topic and the students learnt a lot.

Max - I learnt there are 300 000 books in the library.

Annabell - We learnt about the star Pua aka that tells you Matariki is coming and that the seven stars are the seven sisters of Matariki.

Faith - Matariki means eyes of god. I enjoyed everything.

Douglas - We played traditional games that Maori tamariki would have played.

Sofia -  I learnt how to use a wiri (drill).

Payton - I enjoyed looking around the museum upstairs at the old fashioned things and the clothing on the mannequins.

Benjamin - I liked looking at the mannequins upstairs.

Dekan - I liked playing with the traditional toys.

Cooper - I liked playing with the spinning top.

Marshall - I enjoyed the scavenger hunt at the library.
