Interview with Mr Poulter

Nikki Geddis —

Team Explorer are learning all about Our Place. As part of our topic we are learning about the history of Bluestone School and who better to ask than Mr Poulter!

Here are some of the interesting things we found out!

The Room 7 classroom used to be the West School library. It was lifted up by a crane and put in it's new position but then it started sinking! An air raid shelter from WW2 was found and a very big hole had to be filled in to stop Room 7 from sinking.

The Room 8 classroom came from Timaru Main School. The truck got stuck on the field and a bulldozer had to come and pull the truck! Then when the classroom was put into place it started tipping towards Hurdley St and the bulldozer had to help again!

The sculpture near the courts was made from a piece of rock from Mt Somers. The rock broke Mr Redhead's trailer. The sculpture symbolises our 4 learning teams.

The logo on our uniforms also symbolises the 4 learning teams and was designed by Mr Redhead.

The sundial came from Timaru Main School.

The name Bluestone came from a competition that was held. A student named Jessica came up with the name Bluestone. Bluestone is the type of rock that came out of the Mt Horrible eruption many, many years ago and is the rock that Timaru is built on so we have a strong foundation. It also means that Bluestone School gives students a strong foundation for their learning.

Mr Poulter, what did it feel like when you became the principal of the new school? “I was so excited to be a principal of a school that I had been a student of, I didn’t want to be a growly old man like the principal was when I was at school.”

Thank you Mr Poulter for sharing lots of interesting facts about the history of our school. We wish you all the best at your new school.

Dekan: I liked learning new facts about Bluestone.

Liam: I liked learning that Mt Horrible didn't have a huge eruption like the mural but that the bluestone oozed out of it.

Zachary: I didn't realise the sculpture by our office was showing 3 people.

Penny: I didn't know our library used to be where the sandpit is now.

Alexandra: I was amazed to find out we used to have huge eagles long, long ago.

Douglas: I didn't know we used to have a swimming pool and I wish we still had a pool!

Amani: I was surprised that Room 7 used to be a library.
