Windmills in Rm 16

Hayden Inkster —

During this term, we were investigating energy sources and identified windmills as one. We found out that windmills use to be used to crush grain and pump water.

Room 16 then looked at what we could use our windmills to drive. The task was to build a windmill that could make something go.

With a lot of planning and ideas, we then started created our first design. All of our first designs failed so it was back to the drawing board for all of us. Some of us used our windmills to drive a car or create a lifting device. Although some had successes some of us had failures too.

Things we found out during this task.

"We found that the windmill tower wasn't stable enough so we had to rebuild it several times. "  Jackson and Rylan

"Our first design of a windmill to drive a car didn't work so was had to change it to the car pulled by a windmill." Luke and Logan

"Our cogs to drive the car had to be loose enough for the windmill to drive it." AJ and Lucas

"Having the rubber band too tight meant that the windmill couldn't drive the propellor." Echo and Blake.

"Cardboard wasn't strong enough to use as the windmill. "  Emma and Daniel

We had to change our plans our many times and the plastic cups were too flimsy for the windmill. Samantha and Lilly

The first object we tried to lift was too heavy so we had to try again with how it lifted the object. Zoe and Hannah

"Our base was too thin to hold the windmill. " Lily E and Tegen

Our windmill made of cardboard wasn't strong enough so we tried adding popsicle sticks to it but it didn't work.  Ethan and Oliver

"The base was too big and heavy for our first design." Maggie , Olivia and Toni

"The way I stuck the bottle tops on didn't catch the wind as well as if they were put on the other way." Charlie and JP

"We had to have the weight of the windmill right for it to work."  Luca and Blake T

"Having the cogs too tight didn't allow the windmill to turn and pull in the boat." Hunter and Mackai.

"After a lot of attempts we decided to redesign the cogs and it turned out to be quite good. " Jorja and Connie.

Overall we were all successful in our own way
