Kāhui Taitamariki at Bluestone

Ann Schaab —

Team Explorer and High Flyers have been fortunate to have Whaea Brenda and Whaea Liv with us to help us understand the protocol when we are manuhiri (visitors) at a Marae.

Room 10 was welcomed to the course with a shared karakia which was also a waiata. They all enjoyed playing a game of Pēnei/Pēnā before learning about the powhiri process for Te Aitarakihi Marae a Iwi. All of the students tried very hard to keep the beat when using rakau sticks as they sang E Pāpā Waiari.

Read some of the comments from Room 10 students:

"We used rakau sticks and learnt to keep the beat as we sang." (Hazel)

"We learnt that there were 8 stages to go through when we visit a marae. We would be the manuhiri (visitors)." (Eliza)

"Men usually sit at the front because they used to protect the women if there was fighting surrounding the marae." (Freddy)

"We have kai together at the end of the day." (Eva H.)
