Bluestone Babes Basketball South Canterbury A Grade Champions for 2017
Bluestone Babes remained unbeaten all season to claim the 2017 title for South Canterbury Basketball.
Well done to the Babes team who showed determination to beat a physical St Josephs side in the Grand Final. Having not been defeated all season but having drawn against this side last time they meet, meant the Babes had to bring their 'A' game in the final. Defense was the key early on in the first half with both teams taking a while to settle their early nerves. Bluestone were first to score and put pressure on the opposition with turnovers and fast breaks. Piper Henry had a strong game both on attack and defense. She contributed 8 points in the first half to help Bluestone lead at half time by 16-5. The intensity lifted as the second half got underway. Bluestone held their composure under some aggressive play. Teamwork was crucial as players were tiring. Connie Dellow lead the attack and scored some much needed second half points, her ball handling skills proving a problem for St Josephs and getting them into foul trouble. All players dug deep to find some extra energy in the dying minutes. The team defended well, causing all sorts of strive for St Josephs, upsetting their rhythm and turning over their possession. Tahlia Green scoring in the second half, along with Piper and Connie to eventually win comfortably by 28-14. A relived coach, Jo Lyne was thrilled with the team and with the well deserved win.
To top off the night Piper Henry was named the Most Valuable Player for the South Canterbury Basketball Year 5/6 girls competition for 2017. A great achievement , well done Piper!
