Mānawatia a Matariki!

Juliet Maude —

Happy Māori New Year!

Ākonga (students) in Team Explorer have been learning about the importance of the Māori New Year - Matariki, which is marked by the appearance of the cluster of stars (commonly known as Pleiades) in the Southern sky in July. Each of the whetū (stars) in the cluster is connected, and named and defined with a purpose. The students have been discovering the meaning of these different whetū; how Māori have traditionally celebrated in the past, and how we can celebrate Matariki today.  Our ākonga have represented their understanding through their poetry, writing and artwork.
