Literacy Comes to Life!

Corinna Brook —

In the junior team we have many ways of making literacy come to life...

Annie Apple, Jumping Jim, Lucy Lamplight and Peter Puppy are just some of the Letterland characters that are helping our students learn their letters and their sounds.  Not only does Letterland teach us the 44 phonemes, but it helps with handwriting, listening to sounds and building up a bank of words with similar sounds.  And, of course, the students enjoy playing the games!

Other ways of making literacy come to life have been:

- relay races where instead of exchanging batons students write words.  Lots of fun!

- writing heart words (these are words that cannot be sounded out, but learned by heart)

- having a Letterland card on hand while we write

- games aimed at the acquisition of rhyming, letters names, letter sounds and syllable counting

- buddy reading

- visiting the library (we love listening to Mrs Ross read a story!)

- daily reading and writing
