Nutrition Detectives
As an extension to our learning about the Human body in Term 1, ‘You only get one body so you need to look after it’; the High Flyers had 3 sessions with a qualified nutritionist.
The first two sessions were in the classroom where students learnt about everyday and occasional foods, food groups, nutrients and how they benefit the human body. We also learnt how to read and understand the nutrition information on the back of packaged foods. Our last session involved each class visiting the local foodstuffs supermarket, New World, where they were nutrition detectives identify everyday and occasional food choices by looking at amount of sugar, fat, salt and recording their findings onto a worksheet.
After the supermarket visit each class was provided with a $60 supermarket voucher that went towards a healthy shared morning tea for the class to enjoy together. This was a really great chance to put the classroom learning into practice designing a healthy morning tea as a class.
