Bluestone Science Fair 2015

Alison Coombridge —

Since 1996 Environment Canterbury have awarded prizes to Canterbury Schools whose students have exhibited outstanding projects. Entries are judged through the School Science and Technology Fairs in Christchurch and Timaru.

Bluestone Year 7&8 students have worked hard researching their ideas, using the technological design process and science investigation process to develop and produce interesting and creative projects. Presentation expectations are high and an important part of the final project.  These are entered into our Bluestone bi-annual Science fair and the top entries will be forwarded to the South Canterbury Science Fair to compete against other South Canterbury entries.

The technological design process involves generating ideas either about a problem or innovation, selecting a solution, building a photo-type, evaluating its effectiveness and presenting the design.  The science process involves asking a question, planning an investigation, carrying out tests, gathering and organising data, making sense scientifically about your findings, recognising possible variables and presenting findings.

Our students have chosen a wide range of topics to look at, some of these include: Designing a defroster for windows, a pooper scooper, a personal work space, handyman can, where there is fire there is smoke, a toothpaste dispenser. Developing anti-cat spray, what food colours do cats favour, do different sensors affect taste, energy mania and  what light is best for plants?
