Room 16 work great in teams to produce some great mains and delicious desserts

Nicole O'Sullivan —

Room 16 students worked hard in the kitchen to pull off some stunning mains and desserts. This left the judges with a tough decision on who the winning group would be!

Over the last 6 weeks, Room 16 have been busy learning about healthy eating, designing a logo, learning how to write clear and precise instructions and designing a menu for our MKR cooking competition.

Today we put all our new learning into action and prepared and cooked a two course meal for some very important and lucky people... the judges. There were 4 groups altogether and they prepared a main and a dessert.

The students first put their skills into action to cook and deliver their main to the judges. Our judges for this round were Julie and Mrs Ross. Judges comments were very positive and not only were these mains presented beautifully they also tasted amazing! These meals included: Tomato and Basil Pasta, Steak Tacos, Greek Baked Chicken with a Side Salad and Pork Belly Roast with mash and vege. These meals were well cooked and the students learnt a lot of new cooking techniques.

Then there was dessert! What some consider the best part of a two course meal! These desserts were some of the best I have seen in the competition and the students need to use a range of skills and techniques to make them successful. The desserts included: Orange Polenta Cake, Fried Doughnuts dipped in chocolate and sprinkles, Blueberry Cheesecake and Ginger Golden Syrup Pudding.  The judges were very impressed with these desserts that they even had a second helping!

The judges had a hard decision to come up with a winner but after discussing the quality of each dish, considering teamwork and ingredients used from the garden, they decided on The Masta Pasta's as the winning group! Well done to this group! These students will now go into the finals and cook off against the other classes in the Think Tank Team, at the end of the year.

Room 16 and I would like to say a huge thank you to our judges- the students appreciated and responded well to your feedback and comments. It was also fantastic to see some parents turn up to watch their kids in action.  And last, but not least, a huge thank you to Jodie, our learning assistant! This competition would not have been possible without her managing the kitchen and offering each group support.

We look forward to the next class, Room 15, cooking next!
