Fraction/Decimal Fun in Fourteen

Rebecca Hamilton —

Are you able to think proportionally with numbers on the go?

One way the students in Room 14 are learning to develop this skill is through Visual Art. You might not have realised how fun fraction/decimal learning could be.  Here at Bluestone students are taught that Mathematics is all around them and they learn how to relate new knowledge into everyday activities.

For this particular activity the students coloured in one hundred tile squares and then totalled these into fractions. Following this they then converted their fractions into percentages.

Based on the artwork of  Ellesworth Kelly, Colours for a Large Wall, 1951. The finished tiles have been displayed in the class environment and will be used to support further decimal lessons.
