Students embrace cultural diversity in the community!

Rebecca Hamilton —

As part of our curriculum focus the High Flyers pod have been focussing on cultural diversity in our community.

Students brainstormed the different cultures in our community and chose a few that they would like to learn more about. With the help of partnerships with local community people the students have been able to experience authentic contexts for their learning.

Students attended the Tongan Society presentation held in our school hall as part of celebrating Tongan Language Week.

Ravinder who works at Aotearoa Literacy has been teaching the students about Henna Tattooing, how to wear traditional costumes and is yet to show the students some traditional Indian dance moves and come to school and help them cook an authentic Indian dish. The students have been so enthusiastic and engaged it's been so wonderful to see.

The team have also been participating in Wednesday morning rotations and have learnt about dance from other cultures, Rakau Maori sticks and Kili-kiti (Samoan Cricket).
