Room 13 Impresses the Judges in a MKR Cooking Competition!

Nicole O'Sullivan —

Room 13 had a very successful day, cooking a 3 course meal for our MKR competition!

Over the past few weeks, Room 13 have been busy planting a garden, learning about healthy eating, designing a logo, learning how to write clear and precise instructions and designing a menu for our MKR cooking competition.

Today we put all our new learning into action and prepared and cooked a three course meal for some very important and lucky people... the judges. There were 5 groups altogether and they prepared an entree, main and a dessert.

The judges were first given an entree, which ranged from a shrimp cocktail, potato and leek soup, garlic bread, sushi and fried prawns and bread with a spicy hummus.  I was impressed that the groups didn't take the easy options and put the effort into making their own bread and hummus.

Next was the main and the judges were absolutely blown away by the standard of these meals.  Not only were they presented beautifully they also tasted amazing! These meals included: crispy fish with  tartare Sauce and crispy potatoes, steak sandwich with wedges, devilled sausages with mash spuds, chicken chilli curry and a baked potato with a garden salad. These meals were well cooked. One judge even said, "they would be happy to pay for them, they was so good!"

Last but not least was the dessert.  What some consider the best part of a three course meal!  Ice cream seemed to be a common theme and each group managed to pull off a delicious ice cream that wowed the judges. As well as ice cream, the groups made chocolate bowls, meringues, vanilla sphere's, chocolate sauces, waffles and fruit kebabs.

The judges had a hard decision to come up with a winner but after discussing the quality of each dish, considering teamwork and ingredients used from the garden, they decided on the Sinking Shrimps as the winning group!  Well done to Sean, Jake, Kyle, Lockie and Ollie!  These boys will now go into the finals and cook off against the other classes in the Think Tank Team at the end of the year.

Room 13 and I would like to say a huge thank you to our judges: Julie Langford, Mr Poulter and Gillian Ross- the students appreciated and responded well to your feedback and comments.  It was also fantastic to see some parents turn up to watch their kids in action.  A huge thank you to these parents for helping with the dishes- I know for a fact the students really appreciated this! And last, but not least, a huge thank you to Jodie, our learning assistant! This competition would not have been possible without her managing the kitchen and offering each group support.

We look forward to the next class, Room 12, cooking next term!
