The Year in Sport at Bluestone

Bluestone School —

Sport is an important part of life at Bluestone School. We are very fortunate to have Julie Langford as our Sports Co-ordinator as she does a fantastic job of sorting sports teams, coaches and managers. Julie has summarised the year below.

2015 has been another busy and successful year for Bluestone Sport.

This year we entered 9 Basketball teams, 5 Hockey teams, 12 Netball teams, 6 Teeball/Softball teams and 3 Touch Rugby Teams in local primary competitions.

Term 1 is always a busy Term, starting with the Police Challenge. Bluestone is always competitive placing in the top 3 for the last 5 years. This year we gained 2nd place once more. The Year 7/8’s took park in a Swimming Survival and Boat Safety Programme. We were invited to participate in the St Andrews Triathlon and most of those students then went on to the South Canterbury Triathlon held at the Bay. We had a number of students and teachers support the Hadlow to Harbour event this year. The swimming sports were held at CBay and many of the successful students went on to the South Canterbury Swimming sports as well. 10 students have supported the PALs programme, (Physical Activity Leaders) organising lunchtime activities for students. Year 7/8 Basketball teams entered the primary competition.

Term 2 all age groups had their Cross Country’s and the SC Cross Country was out at Waihi. We had great success at this event and 10 students qualified for the Inter regional Cross Country in Blenheim. The Learn to Swim Programme started for Years 1-6 down at CBay where students were bused down daily for 10 lessons. Rippa Rugby held their annual tournament, again Bluestone were very competitive, unlucky to not make finals. Netball and Hockey also started in this term.

In Term 3 a team of keen gymnasts prepared for the South Canterbury Primary Schools Competition held at the Southern Trusts Events Centre. The year 7/8 students had a school sports exchange with Waimataitai, winning the cup for the third year running. During this term year 3-6 Basketball started, also Touch and Teeball/Softball.

Term 4 was another busy team. A girls and a boys cricket team prepared for the Active Post Cricket Tournament which was held at Ashbury Park. Both teams qualified for finals, to be played in 2016. A group of students took part in the SC Mountain Biking Race held at the Scenic Reserve. Years 3-8 had a fun afternoon participating in the Top Team Challenge, testing their skills, problem solving and teamwork. Unfortunately this year the SC Tennis Tournament was cancelled due to bad weather. Te Tahi, Creative Creatures, Team Explorer athletics days were held here at Bluestone, a great day for the parents and caregivers to come and support their children. The years 5 – 8 students athletics day up at Aorangi Park saw many records broken again and a very successful SC Athletics day.

I congratulate all teams and students especially those students who gained placings or were chosen to represent our school or South Canterbury in their chosen sports. I thank all those who have supported our school whether it has been transporting students to events, coaching or managing.

Merry Christmas
