The Year 7/8 students have been studying various artists including Wassily Kandinsky, Andy Warhol and Frank Stella.

Frank Philip Stella (born 1936) was an American painter, sculptor and printmaker. He was thought to be the most influential painter of his generation. He began using canvases of different shapes, such as ovals and V-shapes. He stopped hanging them on walls and instead put them on the floor like sculptures. His work became more three-dimensional to the point where he started producing large, free-standing metal sculptures with tangles of curves, spirals and loops.

Room 15 first looked at examples of Stella's work. We learnt he focused on the basic elements of an artwork - colour, shape and composition.

We began with a 2-D abstract drawing of line ("We took a line for a walk").   We then considered and applied texture and colour.

The next step was to cut out the 2-D artwork.  We had to think about what parts of our artwork could be cut and lifted to make a 3-D sculpture.

Below are some examples of each step and the final sculptures.
